Council backs riverside cycle route after two-year consultation

The council voted last night to fund a six-kilometre cycle route along the north bank, ending a consultation that drew more than 4,000 responses. Work starts in the spring and the first section, from the old mill to the station, opens within a year.
Supporters say the route will take an estimated 1,200 car journeys a day off the ring road. Traders on Mill Street, who lose eleven parking bays, asked for a loading window in the mornings and got one.
The scheme is paid for from the active travel fund, with the remainder from a developer contribution tied to the riverside flats. A second phase, linking the route to the hospital, goes to consultation next year.
